About this work...

Nature is sensual and erotic. It is a constant spiritual awakening filled with sacred habitats and divine forces. There is no need for transcendence over the earthly world, over our bodies, for it is here we find heaven. In an earth-centered perspective we are part of the earth, of nature. Our bodies are our soul, our erotic landscape. Our dreams and fantasies dwell in our bodies as much as elsewhere.

My work is mostly intuitive and through an iterative process my different thoughts, feelings, and images emerge and converge as one concept. I try to create an image that is an experience if one chooses to step into it. This image can be interpreted in different ways and on different levels. In my portrayal of 'The Erotic Landscape', the title borrowed from a work by Terry Tempest Wiliiams, many photographs and actual scans of moss, bark, butterfly wings, trees, and clouds directly reflect the true eroticism of nature. The concept and figures are influenced by magic realism and anthropomorphism. Oddly, like an abstract dream playing out, it is a fantasy you can only experience through images and feeling.

The main figures are not completely gendered, they represent both the feminine and the masculine, yet neither figure is completely one or the other. The candy colors also portray this contrast and the playful, lighthearted nature of eroticism while the butterfly/tiger figure (the animal world), reaches to explore the depths of the tree (the plant world), not knowing if mystical temples lie within or if the gates will magically open if prodded. Perhaps, the tendrils must work their way through the complex of entryways, an intrigue of possibilities. With many tendrils, many possibilities can be explored at whim, some perhaps just intertwined around the structurally equivalent limbs, or gently touching the textured surface of the bark. The erotic tension builds in anticipation of exploring the mystery or of being explored.
