'Spirit Maidens" Copyright Chris Lawrence eosceres.com

. spirit maidens .

About this work...

These 'spirit maidens' were inspired mostly by female Kachinas, but there are spirit maidens in almost all cultures. I also wanted to show that a 'Spirit Maiden' or having spiritual knowledge and power is not age dependent. It is said one can be born with an old soul. If this is true, one can also be born with a new soul, a soul that approaches all with new eyes. Whether new or old, one does not just happen upon their spirit one day, it is ever present.

For this work, I photographed vintage and authentic Native American dolls. The main photograph was altered mostly through color changes and using prototypical Native American female Kachina masks/faces.

                                                        Eos Ceres

eos

the goddess of the dawn lives by the streams at the eastern end of the earth, known as aurora (roman), ishtar (assyrian), and the hindu daughter of heaven

"easter" (eostre) was also goddess of spring with all its fertility symbols (bunnies & eggs) and fertility rites

eos, eostre, ostara, are related to the sanskrit and vedic usra or ushas, ushastara (zendic) , ausra (lithuanian), and austron (teutonic)

ceres

the goddess of agriculture, of the harvest, in ancient mythology symbolizing the cultivated, fertile soil that fed humanity - when pluto kidnapped ceres' daughter persephone, all the abundance of nature to dry up, when persephone was returned, ceres rejoiced, seeds sprouted, flowers bloomed, and crops once again filled the field.

ceres is the largest of the four major asteroids
